It came out of my mouth again the other day, that I hate the prosperity gospel. I was reminded that the poverty gospel is just as destructive. Neither one are what the Bible tells us, the Gospel is the Good News of Jesus, it’s not about us and what we have and don’t have. The prosperity gospel tells us to name it and claim it, God gives you what you want. The poverty gospel says you can’t have anything and you must live in need and want. Neither of these is what Jesus taught. Jesus told the rich young ruler to give away all he had to the poor but he also said of the woman who was criticized for pouring expensive oil on his head, that she did a beautiful thing, and said the poor would always be with us. Once again it’s the heart God is interested in and our trust in Him, and our finances are one thing that can reveal what is in our hearts and who or what are we devoted to. Proverbs 30:8-9Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need.Otherwise, I might have too much and deny you, saying, “Who is the Lord?” or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God.
